Since 1985 the Los Banos Chamber of Commerce has coordinated an annual community Christmas Parade in downtown Los Banos.

The chamber’s board of directors chooses a parade theme and entrants are encouraged to decorate their entries using the chosen theme.  The entries are judged by the four representatives for each award; The Chamber President Award, The Mayor's Award, The Los Banos Arts Council Award and Parade Sponsor award, which award plaques are presented to the winners of the various categories.

The parade takes place on Sixth Street beginning at K Street and concludes at the Henry Miller Plaza. Once the parade judges have made their decisions, awards are presented, the Christmas tree lighting ceremony takes place followed by a high school choir performance.

Each year there are over 50 entries with hundreds of people lining the downtown street to watch the parade — rain or shine. The last entry is always Santa himself sitting or standing in a different mode of transportation each year.

Since the parade is at night, the entrants are encouraged to decorate their entries with lights to illuminate the evening. Having the parade at night also allows as many community members as possible to attend.

During the last few years, local non-profit organizations have sold hot chocolate and coffee to parade watchers and has helped keep everyone warm during what can be a cold evening.

The Chamber committee responsible for planning The Downtown Christmas Parade begins their work early in the year and welcomes anyone who would like to help make the event successful. Call the Chamber office at (209) 826-2495 for more information.
